Independence Park Theatre is a nonprofit agency and extension of the Recreation and Park Commission of East Baton Rouge Parish. Opening its doors in 2000, IPT provides professional theatre services to BREC, East Baton Rouge Parish schools, nonprofit performing arts organizations and other event sponsors; and, arts education programming for the children of East Baton Rouge Parish. The theatre seeks to showcase local, regional and national performing arts organizations and support efforts to increase travel and tourism to East Baton Rouge Parish.

Independence Park Theatre cost 2.2 million dollars to construct and was designed by the architectural firm Bani, Carville and Brown. The interior was designed by Tracy Lamoyne of Lamoyne Design Associates. IPT’s first performance was Jamie Wax’s “Goin to Jackson” which opened on April 24, 2001.
